The inherited records are largely but not exclusively hearsay and hyperbole. The recurring indicator is that Hornbys emigrated to South Carolina before 1776. Official records indicate a William Hornby arriving with his wife and children from Ireland and becoming members of St. Michael's Church in Charleston. A personal narrative indicates England rather than Ireland, an older brother with a title left behind to inherit the castle, and brothers John and James both dying as young men in horseback riding accidents. No evidence of any of this can be found, only rampant evidence to the contrary. The children asserted as John's are in South Carolina public and vital records as Philip's. The facts about William's children are thus uncertain and, being only partly documented, likely to remain so. A Hornby married a Juhan, married a Breaker, married a Court.
