Lewis Greene and his descendants are well documented by numerous records in 17th and early 18th century Tidewater Virginia, and the line of descent is clear. The family is not related to the Lewises, however, and the first generations rely on assertion. The name is also so common that distinguishing among individ-uals and families and determining relations is at best difficult.

generation no. 1
Lewis Greene, born c 1645, of Charles City Co. VA, died 1730 in Prince George Co. (see deeds). Married c 1669 Susannah Griggs in Baly's Creek, Westover Parish, Henrico Co., born c 1650 in Charles City Co.
generation no. 2
William Greene, born c 1690 in Charles City Co., died 19 December 1749 in Surry Co. Married Mary Jones, born c 1694.
generation no. 3
William Greene, born c 1720 in Surry Co. VA, died either 1 August 1777 or 1783 in Caswell Co. NC. Will dated 3 October 1777. Married Lucy Tyus, born c 1734, daughter of John Tyus, surveyor and land owner Surry Co VA. and Ann Branch.
Note: This generation is a weak link, but bolstered by Greene-Caddell Bible records. Numerous unsourced lineages indicate William Greene as first marrying Ann Robinson in Stafford County. That marriage of 18 December 1743 and the birthdays of their children — Sarah 1744, Dorcas 1746, Annis 1749, Mary 1751, Jael 1753, and William 1756 — are fully documented in the Overwharton Parish register. William the father is thus not the same he as in Surry County married to Lucy Tyus. Similarly, the descent Charles Browning indicated from Robert Green and Eleanor Dunn and their seven red-haired sons to Nicholas Green and Elizabeth Price is dismissed, in large part because none of their well-documented eleven children was named Elizabeth. The Tyus marriage demonstrates itself also in the name Lucy Tyus appearing in the third generation. John Tyus Senior, born c 1681, married Mary Jordon. John Tyus Junior and his wife Ann Branch witnessed the wills of Benjamin Harrison and between 1728 and 1744 had nine children: Lewis, Thomas, Sarah, Lucy, Elizabeth, Richard, Benjamin, Nancy, and Absalom.
