Colonel Miles (also Mylles) Cary emigrated in Virginia in 1645, some years after his uncle James had settled in Massachusetts. Acquiring his father-in-law's lands at Windmill Point and Magpie Swamp, ultimately owned 2,600 acres in Warwick Co., including properties later known as Richneck and Skiff's Creek. Also owner of a mill, a store, and a number of slaves, he was killed at Hampton Roads in a final action of the second English-Dutch War (1665-1667). His tombstone was found 200 years later in five pieces under a massive walnut tree.
