Rootes

Very little indeed is known of the Rootes in Virginia before Major Philip and the 18th century. Only through a letter from George Washington to him do we know the name of his father. Nothing else. The infamous coat of arms appears, along with the proverbial right to use it, but aside from that....

Philip Rootes, born circa 1696 Gloucester Co, died 1756 Rosewall, King & Queen Co. Married Mildred Reade, daughter of Thomas Reade and Lucy Gwynne.

Generation No. 3

Thomas Reade Rootes I, born 1737, died 1765, married Martha Jacquelin Smith on 8 February 1763.

Generation No. 4

Thomas Reade Rootes II, born February 23, 1764 and died bankrupt owning White Marsh in Gloucester County on January 22, 1824. Married Sarah Ryng Battaile.

Generation No. 5

Sarah Robinson Rootes, born September 20, 1792 and died 1866. Married John Addison Cobb of Georgia after long distance courtship.
