Two theories on this family: one involving the Hugenot Peter who had three sons, and the other the Attagare family who devolved from Saxons to a series of Lord Mayors of London in the 16th century. On the first, popular historical ruminations and documents which can't be cited have it that a Peter Garard—one of many Huguenots who left France after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 and were naturalized in England—changed his name to Garrard and was the grandfather of the brothers Robert, John and Jacob Garrard. These three—following the Colonial three brothers motif—arrived in Virginia about 1750 and went to Stafford County. Existing Virginia records for Overwharton parish in Stafford County confirm a portion of this: that Anthony, son of Jacob Garrard, was baptised on October 12, 1756. Shortly thereafter this branch of the Garrards, and there were several in the state, left Virginia for the Carolinas. On the second, the issue is the connection between the Attagare/Garrards and Jacob. A convenient record citing him as the son of Samuel, Lord Mayor in 1700, and Mary Anthonie, and marrying Elizabeth Gould daughter of Sir Nicholas hasn't been successfully proven either.
Jacob Garrard, emigrated from England to Virginia circa 1750, killed during Revolutionary War in North Carolina (not substantiated). Said to have married Sarah Waters, daughter of John Waters and Mary Elizabeth Hack. Was married to Mildred at the time his son Anthony was born in Stafford County, Virginia.
