Genealogy

Bordeaux

As the original story went, among the thousands of Hugenots who fled France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 was a Viscount Francis Purcell de Bordeaux, a near relative of Henry IV and a nobleman of great wealth, who disposed of his landed estates at great sacrifice, nadda nadda yadda yadda. His commercial business, the old lady wrote, he transferred successfully, yadda yadda. For many years, she continued, the family remained in England. Not quite the way it happened. In fact, there was a family, about which virtually nothing is known. One of whom, Jacques, was a blacksmith who moved from Grenoble, France to Charleston, South Carolina at the appropriate time (of the revocation). His son Anthony, the only one of three boys to live to adulthood, was a carpenter.
