Because different causal mechanisms may underlie different types of crime such analyses would also benefit from examination of specific trajectories of specific types of crime at places. It may be for example, that homicide trajectories at places differ markedly from those we observed here, though of course such studies might encounter new problems in defining trajectories when the occurrence of such crime events is relatively rare at micro units of analysis. Though for our purposes, focusing on general trends, such as those represented by stable, increasing and decreasing trajectories has allowed us to examine assumptions underlying hot spots approaches more directly, more specific analyses of the form or geography of specific trajectories may also lead to significant new insights about crime at place.
While the police may affect social disorganization at crime places by reinforcing forces of social organization and social control, the social disorganization perspective suggests emphasis on a much broader set of policies than increased police attention. If the primary causal mechanism underlying crime trajectories can be found in such factors as single family households, racial heterogeneity and economic deprivation, all linked to the social disorganization perspective, then a much wider set of social interventions would be required to change the form of trajectories at crime hot spots.
These results certainly support the relevance of crime salience, inasmuch as the perception that crime is violent and both concern about and fear of crime significantly predict support for punitiveness in many of our estimates. But our results linking punitive attitudes to the racial typification of crime suggest that there may be a racial overlay to the crime salience issue. Indeed, it is when concern about crime and the perception that crime is violent are "low" that racial typification of crime is a significant predictor of punitiveness. In these contexts a racialized crime threat may substituting for a generalized threat that is presumed by crime salience. The relationship demonstrated here between the racial typification of crime and punitiveness is consistent with the mechanism of "essentialism" that — has shown to be an instrumental moment in the politics of "exclusion." The belief that "others" are essentially different from oneself or one's own group "allows people to believe in their own superiority while being able to demonize the other, as essentially wicked, stupid or criminal". A multivariate analysis of the independent effect of each of the illegal gun trafficking indicators on time-to-crime was conducted to examine whether the trafficking indicators we identified remained significant predictors controlling for the effects of the other factors. As with the bivariate analysis, the indicator variables are examined in terms of their substantive/temporal position in the process of illegally diverting guns from legitimate firearms commerce to the ultimate possessors of the crime gun. The independent effects of individual trafficking indicators (along with the effects of control variables) on time-to-crime are assessed in terms of the substantive/temporal category in which they enter the illegal firearms diversion process. This also enables us to examine to what extent the effects of individual indicators are mediated by the addition of later indicator variables that operate at later stages in the process of the illegal diversion of firearms. However, we examine overall effect of each independent variable in terms of the last stage in the analysis that includes each of the independent variables.
Very low fertility in advanced countries today is the outcome of a conflict or inconsistency between high gender equity in individual-oriented institutions and sustained gender inequity in family-oriented institutions.
